What is Sedation?
Sedation is the process of administering medication to a patient to help them relax and reduce anxiety during a medical procedure, such as oral surgery. We offer a variety of sedation options, including IV sedation, oral sedation, and nitrous oxide. Our board-certified surgeons will help to determine the best option for you, based on your individual needs and comfort level.
The benefits of sedation
Sedation can provide many benefits, including reduced discomfort and anxiety levels before and during your procedure. Sedation also allows our surgeons to complete the procedure quickly and efficiently, ensuring that you get the best results possible. Types of sedation
At Alexandria Oral Surgery, we offer multiple sedation options. So whether your undergoing a simple procedure or a more complex treatment, you can rest easy knowing that you’ll be comfortable and safe throughout your visit.
Laughing gas
Laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, is a colorless and odorless gas that is administered through a mask placed over the nose. It has a mild sedative effect and can help patients feel relaxed and less anxious during a dental procedure. Laughing gas is often used for minor procedures or for patients who have mild anxiety.
Oral conscious sedation
Oral conscious sedation involves taking a pill or liquid medication before the procedure to help the patient feel more relaxed and drowsy. The medication can range from mild to moderate, and the patient is able to respond to instructions during the procedure but is unlikely to remember the details of the surgery afterwards. This form of sedation is often used for longer procedures or for patients who have moderate anxiety.
IV sedation
IV sedation involves administering sedative medications directly into the bloodstream through an IV line. This form of sedation can provide a deeper level of sedation than oral conscious sedation and can be adjusted as needed during the procedure. The patient may be able to respond to verbal commands during the procedure, but will likely not remember the details of the surgery afterwards. IV sedation is often used for more complex procedures or for patients who have severe anxiety or fear.
The sedation treatment process
The sedation process will vary slightly depending on the type of sedation being used, but overall, here's what you can expect before and during your appointment:
1
Consultation
Before the procedure, your doctor will have a consultation with you to discuss your medical history and any concerns you may have. This is to ensure that the type of sedation used is appropriate and safe. Pre-sedation instructions will also be outlined, including fasting prior to the procedure and having an escort to take you home.
2
Administration of Sedation
Once the appropriate sedation method has been determined, the medication will be safely administered through a mask, an IV line, or in the form of a pill.
3
Monitoring and Recovery
During the procedure, your vital signs will be constantly monitored to ensure your safety. You will be kept safe and comfortable for the procedure. After the procedure is complete, you will recover in a comfortable and relaxed setting.
