Types of oral trauma treatments
Every patient who experiences facial trauma will have unique needs to address. We’ll work with you tailor your treatment to your individual situation.
Tooth splints
Tooth splints are dental appliances that are used to stabilize and support teeth that have been damaged due to oral or facial trauma. When a tooth is fractured, dislocated, or knocked out, a splint may be necessary to help reposition the tooth. A tooth splint is typically made of a strong, durable material such as wire, composite resin, or acrylic. The temporary splint is bonded to the damaged tooth and adjacent teeth, providing stability and support during the healing process.
Jaw wiring
Jaw wiring is a dental procedure that involves the use of wires and other temporary appliances to hold the jaw in a specific position. This technique can be used to treat patients who have experienced facial or oral trauma, such as a broken jaw or a severe dental injury. Jaw wiring immobilizes the jaw, allowing the bones and tissues to heal and realign properly—similar to a cast for a broken limb. The wires are attached to the teeth using temporary braces, and are tightened to provide the necessary support and stability.
Metal plates
Metal plates are made of biocompatible titanium. They are used to reconstruct damaged facial structures and provide secure, rigid support for fractured facial bones. Custom metal plates are secured with screws to ensure proper positioning and healing of facial fractures.
The facial trauma treatment process
We understand that experiencing facial trauma can be both scary and stressful, but we’re here to help guide you through it, and restore your oral health.
1
Evaluation and diagnosis
The first step in treating facial or oral trauma is to have a consultation with an experienced oral surgeon at Alexandria Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. During this initial meeting, your doctor will examine the extent of the injury and assess any damage to the teeth, jaw, or surrounding structures. They understand that this can be a stressful and difficult time, and will take the time to answer any questions and address any concerns that the patient may have. They will review your medical records and take x-rays or other imaging tests that may be necessary to determine the best course of treatment.
2
Treatment planning and implementation
Once the evaluation is complete, your doctor will develop a customized treatment plan based on your specific needs. This may involve the use of dental appliances such as metal plates, tooth splints, or jaw wiring to provide support and stability during the healing process. The surgeon will explain the treatment options and work with you to develop a plan that you’re comfortable with.
3
Follow-up care and recovery
Post-treatment instructions will be provided so you will know what to expect. Follow-up care will be planned out to facilitate proper healing. Your team at Alexandria Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery understands that recovery can be a difficult and stressful time. We will work to ensure you are comfortable and confident throughout the healing process.
